5 Top Tips for Getting your Exercise Mojo back

Jane Arlow • September 15, 2022

Did your mojo take a break over the summer?

Well, here we are. It's the Autumn Equinox next week, and at least in the UK, the weather has very definitely turned away from the heat of summer. And now, the thought of getting back to "normal" seems both comforting and a little scary, because, you know it's time to get back to an exercise routine.

So, how can you help yourself over that motivation hump and into class?

1. Remember why you started doing it in the first place

Was it that you were looking for self-care, wellbeing, head space, strength...? Reflect on what it would feel like to have those things back in your life; and how has it felt without them.

Perhaps during your reflections, you might notice other things that you missed about your regular exercise routine, that weren't necessarily the reasons why you started. Maybe you're missing the community and laughs of your group; or it could be that you've realised that it gave a cadence and rhythm to your week that made you feel more grounded; or maybe it just gave you an hour to yourself.

Once you've reminded yourself of your "why", it helps you to find the reason why you should go back.

2. Make a plan

It can be easy to get overwhelmed by choice and get stuck in a procrastination loop about where to start.

Or, conversely, to go cray-cray the first week back, re-start everything all at once and find that after three days, you're so sore, you can't move off the sofa!

So, let's be realistic. Start with one class - something you really enjoy. Maybe it's Pilates, maybe it's PiYo (which is back online from Saturday 17th September), or something else.

Whatever it is, make sure it's something that you enjoy and find fun.

And after your class, reflect on how you feel. Tired, but energised? Happy? Little bit sweaty? How did you sleep?

Listen to your body and if it feels good, add something else.

3. Make it a "non-negotiable"

Did you spend the whole summer running around, trying to make sure that everyone else was having the best time? Organizing the "perfect" holiday? Arranging days out, events and activities? All about everyone else? Nothing about you?

Now it's your time. Carve it out. Protect it fiercely. Because if you don't take the time to look after yourself a) what message are you sending to the younger females around you about their right to have their needs met and b) put your own oxygen mask on first please!

And not just once! One class, once in a while is not going to improve your wellbeing. You need consistency and care.

So, don't just book into one class now, book it out for a few weeks; put it on the family calendar; put it in your diary. Make it a date with yourself!

4. K.I.S.S ("Keep it Simple, Sweetie"!)

It does not need to be complicated.

You don't need all the gear. You don't even have to leave the house

All you need is a mat and a device. Log on, get it done, log off and you're done.

OK, maybe you need a new pair of leggings to help you with that "new term" feeling. Use the code JANEARLOW for 20% off!

5. Have fun!

How does it feel when you "have" to do something that you don't enjoy? It's a bore-out, right?

The time drags. You're having to chivvy yourself along. You kind of half-arse it.

Now, how does it feel when you're having fun?

The time whizzes by. You find yourself in a state of "flow" where mind and body seem to be in synch. When it ends, you realise that you did your best and you feel fabulous.

And perhaps, you need to try something new. Why not check out the timetable for a something you've never tried before? You never know, you might just enjoy it!

How can I help you?

I love helping busy women like you feel stronger, move more freely and have fewer aches and pains.

You can choose from a selection of online and in-person classes, workshops and retreats that are designed to support your wellbeing. Whether it's something "mind-body"; or something that's going to get your heart-rate racing, it's all about you.
